The global medicinal cannabis market presents a transformative opportunity for Malawi as the country shifts focus from declining tobacco exports to high-value crops. The amendment of Malawi’s cannabis legislation has opened doors to legal cultivation, production, processing, and export of medicinal cannabis and industrial hemp, creating a new frontier for economic growth.

Leveraging this potential, MMC Ltd (MW), a subsidiary of MMC Laboratories, is undertaking an ambitious project to establish a state-of-the-art processing and extraction facility in Lilongwe. This facility will produce Wellness products and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) from cannabis biomass for export to global pharmaceutical markets.

EDF’s financing has been instrumental in scaling the implementation of this project. Through a combination of loan and equity investment, EDF has supported operational expenses and capital expenditures critical to setting up the facility. This strategic investment has enabled MMC Ltd to make significant strides, including commencing the construction of the processing plant and harvesting its first cannabis crop.

These milestones mark substantial progress in establishing a thriving medicinal cannabis value chain in Malawi. The project not only positions MMC Ltd as a competitive producer for the global market but also promotes economic diversification, providing local farmers with new opportunities and unlocking Malawi’s export potential.
